Railings — SS, MS, aluminium, glass and finishes explained

Railings are both a safety element and a design statement. The right material, grade and finish determines how your staircase and balcony look and perform over decades.

Simple summary — for homeowners

For most homes in Bengaluru, SS 304 hairline finish railings with toughened glass panels are the most popular and practical choice — they look premium, require minimal maintenance and last 30+ years. Avoid MS railings for staircases inside the home — they rust and require repainting every few years. If you are near the coast or have a swimming pool, always specify SS 316 — it has higher nickel content and resists salt-induced corrosion. For all glass in railings, only toughened or laminated glass is acceptable — plain float glass is dangerous and illegal for this application.

Stainless steel grades — SS 202 vs 304 vs 316

The grade of stainless steel is determined by its nickel and chromium content. Higher nickel means better corrosion resistance — and higher cost.

⚠ Warning — SS 202 fraud is common

Many contractors supply SS 202 while billing for SS 304. SS 202 has lower nickel content and will rust within 3–5 years, especially in Bengaluru's humid climate. Always ask for the material test certificate (MTC) and verify the grade marking on the tube or bar. Use a magnet — genuine SS 304 is weakly magnetic; SS 202 is more magnetic. This is not a definitive test but a quick field check.

Surface finishes

Finish
Appearance
Maintenance
Best use
Mirror polish (#8)
High gloss, reflective
Shows fingerprints — frequent cleaning
Premium interiors, feature staircases
Hairline (#4)
Brushed, linear texture
Hides fingerprints well
Most popular — modern interiors and exteriors
Satin (#6)
Semi-gloss, smooth
Medium — between mirror and hairline
Contemporary interiors
Powder coated (MS/Al)
Any colour — matt or gloss
Repaint every 5–8 years
MS railings, aluminium sections
Hot dip galvanized (MS)
Matte grey
25+ year corrosion protection
Outdoor MS structures before painting
Anodized (Aluminium)
Metallic — gold, silver, bronze
Very low — electrochemical protection
Aluminium profiles, window sections

Glass for railings — safety specifications

Plain float glass must never be used for railings — it is illegal and dangerous. Only toughened or laminated glass is acceptable per NBC 2016.

Glass type

Breakage behaviour
Note
Toughened glass 10mm
4–5× float glass
Small granules — safer
Must be IS 2553 certified
Toughened glass 12mm
5× float glass
Small granules — safer
Minimum for frameless systems
Laminated 10.38mm
As float glass
Holds together — safest
Best safety — interlayer holds broken pieces
Laminated 13.14mm
As float glass
Holds together — safest
Maximum safety for public spaces

MS railing — fabrication and protection

01
Hot dip galvanizing before painting
For any MS railing exposed to weather, hot dip galvanizing provides 25+ years of corrosion protection under paint. Galvanizing alone is not a finish — it must be painted over with epoxy primer and enamel paint.
02
Epoxy primer is mandatory
Never paint MS directly with enamel. Always apply a red oxide or epoxy primer first. The primer bonds to the metal and provides the base for the top coat.
03
Weld quality determines lifespan
Poor welds corrode first. Specify full penetration welds, ground smooth and treated before painting. Never accept tack welds on structural railings.
04
Repaint every 5–7 years
MS railings in outdoor locations must be inspected annually and repainted every 5–7 years. Rust creep under old paint causes rapid section loss if neglected.
05
Powder coating vs enamel
Powder coating provides a harder, more uniform finish than brush-applied enamel and is available in any RAL colour. It is the preferred finish for aluminium and MS in visible locations.
Homekrate recommendation
Basic
MS railing with hot dip galvanizing + powder coat. Toughened glass panels where required.
Cost-effective. Needs repainting every 5–7 years. Good for compound walls and utility staircases.
Standard
SS 304 hairline finish with toughened glass panels 10mm.
Our default. 30+ year maintenance-free system. Most popular choice for residential staircases and balconies.
Premium
SS 316 hairline or mirror finish with frameless 12mm toughened or laminated glass panels.
Maximum durability and visual impact. Frameless glass creates a seamless, open look.
